Credit Monitoring Scam - January 21,2014
After the Target, Neiman Marcus, and some other major brand retailer yet to be revealed system intrusions, scammers are sending phishing attacks offering free Credit Monitoring Service.
This is a standard practice for companies that have had customer card information compromised which is why the scammers are sending these emails and most likely will have a relatively good rate of success.
We are aware of a legitimate offer of free credit monitoring service from Target through a recent email to customers who had their card information compromised. This offer did not contain a link to access the free service but had a web address of creditmonitoring.target.com where you could obtain an activation code for the service.
Any email containing links or attachments when offering this type of service are very highly likely a scam to obtain your personal information. As always, Think Before You Click and delete these emails.
